Simple Laundry Tips That Make Your Clothes Last Longer

Fresh clean laundry at Midvale Express Laundromat in Midvale, Salt Lake County, Utah

Most clothing damage happens in the wash, not through everyday wear. The right habits protect fabric, preserve color, and save you money over time.

Sort by Color and Fabric Weight

Washing darks with lights is the obvious one, but fabric weight matters too. Heavy denim and towels create friction that wears down lighter fabrics like T-shirts and underwear. Keeping similar weights together reduces pilling and stretching.

Wash in Cold Water by Default

Hot water is rarely necessary and causes shrinkage, color fading, and fiber breakdown over repeated washes. Modern detergents are formulated to work just as well in cold water. Save hot for items that genuinely need sanitizing, like towels or bedding.

Turn Dark Clothes Inside Out

The agitation of a wash cycle fades dark fabrics from the outside. Turning them inside out puts the exposed surface away from abrasion, keeping colors richer wash after wash.

Don't Overdry

Heat is the biggest enemy of fabric longevity. Most clothes only need medium heat and should come out slightly warm when done, not hot. Overdrying breaks down elastic, shrinks cotton, and makes fabrics feel rough.

If a dryer has a sensor dry option, use it. It stops automatically when moisture is gone rather than running a full timed cycle. Our high-capacity dryers at Midvale Express make it easy to dry at the right temperature without guesswork.

Zip Zippers, Button Buttons

Open zipper teeth act like sandpaper against other items in the drum. Zipping them up before washing protects everything else in the load and keeps the zipper itself from snagging and bending.
