How to Wash Comforters and Bulky Items at a Laundromat

Washing a comforter at home often means cramming it into a machine that's too small, which leads to uneven cleaning and poor rinsing. A laundromat with large-capacity washers in Midvale, like our 60 lb and 80 lb machines, solves that problem immediately.
Choose the Right Machine Size
A queen or king comforter typically needs at least a 40–60 lb capacity washer to move freely through the water. When bedding is stuffed into a small drum, detergent can't fully penetrate the fill and water can't rinse it out properly.
At Midvale Express, we have multiple 80 lb, 60 lb, and 40 lb washers available, so you can match the machine to the load instead of the other way around.
Use the Right Amount of Detergent
Bulky items don't need more detergent. They often need less. Too much detergent in a large drum takes longer to rinse and can leave residue in the fill that causes odors over time.
A single measured cap of HE-compatible detergent is usually enough for even a large comforter.
Dry Thoroughly. Don't Rush It.
The most common mistake is underdrying. Comforters have thick fill that holds moisture long after the outside feels dry. A damp comforter stored in a linen closet is a recipe for mildew.
Use a high-capacity dryer and run it for at least 60–90 minutes, pausing to redistribute the fill every 20–30 minutes. Tossing in a couple of dryer balls helps break up clumps and speeds drying.
When to Use Wash & Fold Instead
If you'd rather skip the process entirely, our Wash & Fold service handles bulky items for you. Drop it off and we'll wash, dry, and fold everything the same day.
